Surrendering your dog.

Giving Up Your Pet

Red Leash Rescue is an open-admission dog rescue for dogs 4yo and up, that are local to Fairfield County. There may be a situation where an exception will be made for a surrounding town or younger special needs dog, but that is on a case by case basis. We understand that sometimes it may be necessary to give up a dog and know the heartache you must feel. We will always attempt to help you keep your dog in place if possible. If it’s not possible we believe it is best to surrender your dog to a rescue like ours that can provide a home based foster network or a home-like setting because municipal shelters can be very stressful to any dog - the noise volume, the lack of engagement, the lack of exercise - it’s overwhelming for them. Our hope is to help your pet avoid that and find a wonderful forever home quickly.

Steps to surrender your dog

  • You must complete the surrender form located in the link below, be completely open with any concerns about behavior.

  • You must provide any/all medical records or call your vet to allow them to be released to us for review

  • Bring your dog to a specified location for a meeting.

  • Items such as favorite toys, food, and bedding are welcome but may not remain with your pet throughout their entire stay.

Will my pet be accepted into the surrender program?

Acceptance into the surrender program is done on a case by case basis. We cannot agree to accept your dog until we have the information above and can meet your dog. Many things factor into acceptance- such as behavioral issues, ability to be with other animals and foster availability. Red Leash Rescue does not discriminate based on an animal’s breed.

Out of imperative safety concerns for fosters and their pets, your dog may be disqualified from the surrender program if they are aggressive towards other animals or people.

There are some considerations that may make it impossible to re-home your pet including, but not limited to: chronic house-soiling, serious destructive behavior, aggression to other animals, self-mutilation, or severe depression.

We will provide you with as much information and guidance as possible in order for you to make the best choice for you and your pet.
