Red Leash Rescue 1st Quarter Update 2025

As we start off the new year at Red Leash Rescue, we are already off to a busy start.  We recently attended a foster fair organized by Bridgeport Animal Control. It was a fun and informative day for people to come out and see if fostering might be right for them and meet us and other rescues so desperately in need of fosters.  We learned that adoptions are a bit slower these days across the board in all rescues and at the shelters as well.  Hopefully this will pick up soon as those adoptions are what allow us to keep helping dogs.  So far this year we have welcomed 16 dogs into our program  Lastly, we have some heartwarming happy endings to share!

A Medical Mystery

Petunia (now Pogo) was brought to the vet to be euthanized. The vet felt there was still some life left in her so she came into the Red Leash program.  Almost immediately we saw what a happy girl she was.  It was funny though, she literally couldn’t bend her legs. Hence the new name as she bounced around like a pogo stick! The vet was absolutely stumped as to why her legs were like that.  Once we tested her for Cushings we learned that if left untreated for a long time, this can happen.  Luckily she was put on the proper medicine and while her legs won’t improve, is now being spoiled and loved by her new mom!

An

Unbelievable Reunion

After getting a call to pull a 16 year old dog from the shelter that desperately needed out, Red Leash came to get Biggie immediately.  The shelter had scanned the chip and tried to reach out to no avail.  A couple of weeks later the family happened to see an email that had also been sent when the chip was scanned and immediately reached out.  This was their long lost dog– stolen from their backyard more than a decade ago! After a few hours of detective work on our end we were sure- this was Biggie’s (who they call Diggie) long lost family.  They now live in Georgia and made immediate plans to fly up to get him.  If you want to watch the amazing tearful reunion click here. You can even see Diggy at his new home in Georgia playing with his cousin Iggy (named in his honor).  Such a heartfelt story!

A Need To Have A Plan

It’s not pleasant to think about, but here at Red Leash we can’t stress enough how important it is to have a plan in place for your dogs.  Whether discussing with a friend or family member and possibly setting some money aside for care of the dog, the alternative is your beloved dog being placed in a shelter should something happen to you.  This quarter alone, we took in five dogs whose owners had died.  Luckily, we were able to take them and keep them out of the shelter system at a time that is already so stressful for them.  Coco, Maggie, Ava, Frankie and Dino are all doing well with new owners or fosters who are patient enough to see them through this traumatic time.

In Memoriam

This quarter we want to recognize the dogs in our program and alumni that have passed.  We lost Monday, Hope, Bobby, Molly, Vinny, Walter, Delsey, Gigi, Ramona and Charlie. We feel so lucky to know that they were loved and spoiled by their adopters- and that's all we want. Knowing each passed in the arms of someone who loved them is the reason we exist.
