Red Leash Rescue 4th Quarter Update 2021

This has been a busy quarter for Red Leash Rescue!  We have adopted out 24 adult and senior dogs in need, giving them a second chance at a new life. We were so fortunate to receive some generous donations around the holidays and want all of our adopters, donors and followers to know how much we appreciate it and what an impact your generosity has on allowing us to not only bring these dogs into the rescue, but provide them with the complete, often complex medical care they each need.  Covid has certainly caused our jobs to be more challenging, but thankfully has not prohibited us from continuing to save these precious dogs.

Samson

Samson’s story was a tough one for us.  The police found him standing over his deceased owner.  He had been there for days.  Samson had a degenerative disc issue, so while he could walk slowly, his back legs were hunched and it was challenging for him to get around.  We were able to get him on a pain management regimen and he really started to perk up and come out of his shell. He was also deaf but nothing would stop sweet Sammy.  He LOVED his stroller walks so he could be out with his foster pack and after an amazing adopter stepped up, he is enjoying all this loving care and more- she is even teaching him sign language!

Winston and Victoria

One cold December morning we had a particularly upsetting surrender.  A bonded pair of dogs were coming into the rescue because the owner was moving to an assisted living facility.  She clearly loved these dogs and we were all very emotional.  We normally don’t keep dogs together and did send them to different fosters but we could tell this pair was different.  They had a deep love for each other so we decided to at least try to adopt them out together.  And of course, our Red Leash community stepped up!! We had multiple applications and were able to place them with an amazing adopter who has years of experience with senior dogs.  Both dogs are settling in beautifully and happy to once again share a bed together…

Willie Mae

Wlillie Mae is a tiny little wisp of a girl we found floundering at the shelter. She was severely matted and wasn’t moving much. We were told possible hospice but we just thought this sweet girl needed time to decompress and a fresh start without all the painful mats that were pulling at her legs and stomach especially. Willie didn’t do much in the first week, just taking in her surroundings and resting, but she was eating and building her strength. She ended up going to a Red Leash Alumni adopter and we were recently sent a video of her running and jumping around their apartment like a puppy- such joy!

Before and After: Molly

Molly came to us in bad shape.  Her mouth was infected and we knew she was at risk of losing multiple teeth and possibly part of her lower jaw.  Her beautiful white fur was mostly stained brown due to the water she had been  drinking and she needed to be spayed.  Upon a closer check up, our wonderful vet at High Ridge Animal Hospital also discovered a hernia that needed to be treated as well.  Molly, however, would not be deterred.  She wanted to be with her foster pack and would do her best to join them on walks and snuggle time in bed.  The vet was booked weeks out but after seeing her mouth, they moved up our appointment to help her as quickly as possible.  After her surgery she came home with no teeth and was shaved down with such care that all of her old fur was gone- even between her toes.  After a few days of healing, she was ready for a fresh start and also went to a Red Leash Alum that said she has a mind of her own and is already ruling the roost!

In Memoriam

This quarter we have mourned the loss of Lola, Diva, Baxter, Archie and Nali.  Each of them came to us suffering in some way- be it loss, sadness fear hunger or abuse -but because of their adopters took a leap of faith,  they knew only love, safety and joy for however log they had left.  We’re grateful to our adopters for giving our dogs the world when it mattered most.
